Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians' Faith

Paul, Silas and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in GOD THE FATHER and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:

       Grace and peace to you.

We always thank GOD for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our GOD and FATHER your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our LORD JESUS CHRIST.
For we know, brothers loved by GOD, that HE has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with THE HOLY SPIRIT and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of THE LORD; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by THE HOLY SPIRIT. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. THE LORD'S message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia--your faith in GOD has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to GOD from idols to serve THE LIVING AND TRUE GOD, and to wait for HIS SON from heaven, whom HE raised from the dead--JESUS, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Paul's 1st Letter to the Thessalonians: chapter 1

Paul's Ministry in Thessalonica

You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure. We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our GOD we dared to tell you HIS gospel in spite of strong opposition. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as men approved by GOD to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but GOD, who tests our hearts. You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed--GOD is our witness. We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else.
As apostles of CHRIST we could have been a burden to you, but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of GOD but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of GOD to you.
You are witnesses, and so is GOD, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of GOD, who calls you into HIS kingdom and glory.
And we also thank GOD continually because, when you received the word of GOD, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of GOD, which is at work in you who believe. For you, brothers, became imitators of GOD'S churches in Judea, which are in CHRIST JESUS: You suffered from your own countrymen the same things those churches suffered from the Jews, who killed THE LORD JESUS and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease GOD and are hostile to all men in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of GOD has come upon them at last.

Paul's Longing to See the Thessalonians

But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. For we wanted to come to you--certainly I, Paul, did, again and again--but satan stopped us. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our LORD JESUS when HE comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. We sent Timothy, who is our brother and GOD'S fellow worker in spreading the gospel of CHRIST, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.

Paul's 1st Letter to the Thessalonians: chapter 2, verses 17 - 20 & chapter 3, verses 1 - 5

Timothy's Encouraging Report

But timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in THE LORD. How can we thank GOD enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our GOD because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
Now may our GOD and FATHER HIMSELF and our LORD JESUS clear the way for us to come to you. May THE LORD make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May HE strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our GOD and FATHER when our LORD JESUS comes with all HIS holy ones.

Living to Please GOD

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please GOD, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in THE LORD JESUS to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of THE LORD JESUS.
It is GOD'S will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know GOD; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. THE LORD will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For GOD did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but GOD, who gives you HIS HOLY SPIRIT.
Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by GOD to love each other. And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

The Coming of THE LORD

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that JESUS died and rose again and so we believe that GOD will bring with JESUS those who have fallen asleep in HIM. According to THE LORD'S own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of THE LORD, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For THE LORD HIMSELF will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of GOD, and the dead in CHRIST will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet THE LORD in the air. And so we will be with THE LORD forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.
Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of THE LORD will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For GOD did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our LORD JESUS CHRIST. HE died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with HIM. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Paul's 1st Letter to the Thessalonians: chapter 4, verses 13 - 18 & chapter 5, verses 1 - 11

Final Instructions

Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in THE LORD and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is GOD'S will for you in CHRIST JESUS.
Do not put out THE SPIRIT'S fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.
May GOD HIMSELF, THE GOD OF PEACE, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. The one who calls you is faithful and HE will do it.

Brothers, pray for us. Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. I charge you before THE LORD to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our LORD JESUS CHRIST be with you.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

Paul, Silas and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in GOD our FATHER and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:

Grace and peace to you from GOD THE FATHER and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

We ought always to thank GOD for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among GOD'S churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
All this is evidence that GOD'S judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of GOD, for which you are suffering. GOD is just: HE will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when THE LORD JESUS is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with HIS powerful angels. HE will punish those who do not know GOD and do not obey the gospel of our LORD JESUS. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of THE LORD and from the majesty of HIS power on the day HE comes to be glorified in HIS holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.
With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our GOD may count you worthy of HIS calling, and that by HIS power HE may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our LORD JESUS may be glorified in you, and you in HIM, according to the grace of our GOD and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Man of Lawlessness

Concerning the coming of our LORD JESUS CHRIST and our being gathered to HIM, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of THE LORD has already come. Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called god or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in GOD'S temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till HE is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom THE LORD JESUS will overthrow with the breath of HIS mouth and destroy by the splendor of HIS coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason GOD sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Paul's 2nd Letter to the Thessalonians: chapter 2, verses 1 - 12

Stand Firm

But we ought always to thank GOD for you, brothers loved by THE LORD, because from the beginning GOD chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of THE SPIRIT and through belief in the truth. HE called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
May our LORD JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF and GOD our FATHER, who loved us and by HIS grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Request for Prayer

Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of THE LORD may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. But THE LORD is faithful, and HE will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. We have confidence in THE LORD that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May THE LORD direct your hearts into GOD'S love and CHRIST'S perseverance.

Warning Against Idleness | Final Greetings

In the name of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."
We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in THE LORD JESUS CHRIST to settle down and earn the bread they eat. And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

Now may THE LORD OF PEACE HIMSELF give you peace at all times and in every way. THE LORD be with all of you.
I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write.
The grace of our LORD JESUS CHRIST be with you all.

Warning Against False Teachers of the Law

Paul, an apostle of CHRIST JESUS by the command of GOD our Savior and of CHRIST JESUS our hope,

To Timothy my true son in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from GOD THE FATHER and CHRIST JESUS our LORD.

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than GOD'S work--which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed GOD, which HE entrusted to me.

Paul's 1st Letter to Timothy: chapter 1, verses 1 - 11

THE LORD'S Grace to Paul

I thank CHRIST JESUS our LORD, who has given me strength, that HE considered me faithful, appointing me to HIS service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our LORD was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in CHRIST JESUS.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: CHRIST JESUS came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, CHRIST JESUS might display HIS unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on HIM and receive eternal life. Now to THE KING ETERNAL, IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE, THE ONLY GOD, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases GOD our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one GOD and one mediator between GOD and men, the man CHRIST JESUS, who gave HIMSELF as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing.
I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship GOD.
A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of GOD'S church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.
Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in CHRIST JESUS.
Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in GOD'S household, which is the church of THE LIVING GOD, the pillar and foundation of the truth. Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great:

       HE appeared in a body,
          was vindicated by THE SPIRIT,
       was seen by angels,
          was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
          was taken up in glory.

Instructions to Timothy

THE SPIRIT clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which GOD created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything GOD created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of GOD and prayer.
If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of CHRIST JESUS, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in THE LIVING GOD, who is THE SAVIOR of all men, and especially of those who believe.
Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Advice About Widows, Elders and Slaves

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to GOD. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in GOD and continues night and day to pray and to ask GOD for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to CHRIST, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. Some have in fact already turned away to follow satan.
If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages." Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.
I charge you, in the sight of GOD and CHRIST JESUS and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illness.
The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden.
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that GOD'S name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them.

Love of Money

If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our LORD JESUS CHRIST and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Paul's 1st Letter to Timothy: chapter 6, verses 3 - 10

Paul's Charge to Timothy

But you, man of GOD, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of GOD, who gives life to everything, and of CHRIST JESUS, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, which GOD will bring about in HIS own time--GOD, the blessed and only Ruler, THE KING of kings and LORD of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To HIM be honor and might forever. Amen.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in GOD, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.
       Grace be with you.

Encouragement to Be Faithful

Paul, an apostle of CHRIST JESUS by the will of GOD, according to the promise of life that is in CHRIST JESUS,

       To Timothy, my dear son:

Grace, mercy and peace from GOD THE FATHER and CHRIST JESUS our LORD.

I thank GOD, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of GOD, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For GOD did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline.
So do not be ashamed to testify about our LORD, or ashamed of me HIS prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of GOD, who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of HIS own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in CHRIST JESUS before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, CHRIST JESUS, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that HE is able to guard what I have entrusted to HIM for that day.
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in CHRIST JESUS. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of THE HOLY SPIRIT who lives in us.
You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
May THE LORD show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. May THE LORD grant that he will find mercy from THE LORD on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in CHRIST JESUS. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of CHRIST JESUS. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs--he wants to please his commanding officer. Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for THE LORD will give you insight into all this.
Remember JESUS CHRIST, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But GOD'S word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in CHRIST JESUS, with eternal glory.
       Here is a trustworthy saying:

       If we died with HIM,
          we will also live with HIM;
       if we endure,
we will also reign with HIM.
       If we disown HIM,
          HE will also disown us;
       if we are faithless,
          HE will remain faithful,
          for HE cannot disown HIMSELF.

Paul's 2nd Letter to Timothy: chapter 1 & chapter 2, verses 1 - 13

A Workman Approved by GOD

Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before GOD against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to GOD as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, GOD'S solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "THE LORD knows those who are HIS," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of THE LORD must turn away from wickedness."
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on THE LORD out of a pure heart. Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And THE LORD'S servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that GOD will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do HIS will.

Godlessness in the Last Days

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of GOD--having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

Paul's 2nd Letter to Timothy: chapter 3, verses 1 - 9

Paul's Charge to Timothy

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet THE LORD rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in CHRIST JESUS will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in CHRIST JESUS. All Scripture is GOD-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of GOD may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
In the presence of GOD and of CHRIST JESUS, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of HIS appearing and HIS kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which THE LORD, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for HIS appearing.

Personal Remarks | Final Greetings

Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. THE LORD will repay him for what he has done. You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. But THE LORD stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. THE LORD will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to HIS heavenly kingdom. To HIM be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers.
THE LORD be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

Titus's Task on Crete

Paul, a servant of GOD and an apostle of JESUS CHRIST for the faith of GOD'S elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness--a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which GOD, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and at HIS appointed season HE brought HIS word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of GOD our Savior.

To Titus, my true son in our common faith:

Grace and peace from GOD THE FATHER and CHRIST JESUS our Savior.

The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with GOD'S work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach--and that for the sake of dishonest gain. Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons." This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know GOD, but by their actions they deny HIM. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

What Must Be Taught to Various Groups

You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of GOD.
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about GOD our Savior attractive.
For the grace of GOD that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great GOD and Savior, JESUS CHRIST, who gave HIMSELF for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for HIMSELF a people that are HIS very own, eager to do what is good.
These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

Doing What Is Good

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of GOD our Savior appeared, HE saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of HIS mercy. HE saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by THE HOLY SPIRIT, whom HE poured out on us generously through JESUS CHRIST our Savior, so that, having been justified by HIS grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in GOD may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there. Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have everything they need. Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives.
Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith.
       Grace be with you all.

Greetings, Thanksgiving and Prayer

Paul, a prisoner of CHRIST JESUS, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home:

Grace to you and peace from GOD our FATHER and THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

I always thank my GOD as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your faith in THE LORD JESUS and your love for all the saints. I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in CHRIST. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

Paul's Letter to Philemon: verses 1 - 7

Paul's Plea for Onesimus

Therefore, although in CHRIST I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul--an old man and now also a prisoner of CHRIST JESUS--I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
I am sending him--who is my very heart--back to you. I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced. Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good--no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in THE LORD.
So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back--not to mention that you owe me your very self. I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in THE LORD; refresh my heart in CHRIST. Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.
Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in CHRIST JESUS, sends you greetings. And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers.
The grace of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST be with your spirit.

THE SON Superior to Angels

In the past GOD spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days HE has spoken to us by HIS SON, whom HE appointed heir of all things, and through whom HE made the universe. THE SON is the radiance of GOD'S glory and the exact representation of HIS being, sustaining all things by HIS powerful word. After HE had provided purification for sins, HE sat down at the right hand of THE MAJESTY in heaven. So HE became as much superior to the angels as the name HE has inherited is superior to theirs.
For to which of the angels did GOD ever say,

       "You are MY Son;
today I have become your Father"?

Or again,

       "I will be his Father,
and he will be MY Son"?

And again, when GOD brings HIS firstborn into the world, HE says,

"Let all GOD'S angels worship HIM."

In speaking of the angels HE says,

       "HE makes HIS angels winds,
       HIS servants flames of fire."

But about THE SON HE says,

"YOUR throne, O GOD, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of YOUR kingdom.
       YOU have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore GOD, YOUR GOD, has set YOU above YOUR companions
by anointing YOU with the oil of joy."

HE also says,

"In the beginning, O LORD, YOU laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of YOUR hands.
       They will perish, but YOU remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
       YOU will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
       But YOU remain the same,
and YOUR years will never end."

To which of the angels did GOD ever say,

          "Sit at MY right hand
       until I make your enemies
          a footstool for your feet"?

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Warning to Pay Attention

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by THE LORD, was confirmed to us by those who heard HIM. GOD also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of THE HOLY SPIRIT distributed according to HIS will.

The Book of Hebrews: chapter 2, verses 1 - 4

JESUS Made Like HIS Brothers

It is not to angels that HE has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified:

"What is man that YOU are mindful of him,
the son of man that YOU care for him?
       YOU made him a little lower than the angels;
YOU crowned him with glory and honor
and put everything under his feet."

In putting everything under him, GOD left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. But we see JESUS, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because HE suffered death, so that by the grace of GOD HE might taste death for everyone.
In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that GOD, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both THE ONE who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So JESUS is not ashamed to call them brothers. HE says,

       "I will declare YOUR name to MY brothers;
in the presence of the congregation I will sing YOUR praises."

And again,

"I will put MY trust in HIM."

And again HE says,

"Here am I, and the children GOD has given ME."

Since the children have flesh and blood, HE too shared in their humanity so that by HIS death HE might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels HE helps, but Abraham's descendants. For this reason HE had to be made like HIS brothers in every way, in order that HE might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to GOD, and that HE might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because HE HIMSELF suffered when HE was tempted, HE is able to help those who are being tempted.
